The Dalcroze School UK
Providing 21st century training and examining
The UK is home to the oldest Dalcroze school in the world (it opened in 1913) and although there is no longer a physical building the training continues in various forms around the country.
The achievements of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze are as relevant now as they were during his lifetime and the aim of today’s training is constantly to adapt the work to contemporary needs and to make it relevant to present-day musicians and artists.
The School provides internationally recognised qualifications and training in Dalcroze Eurhythmics throughout the British Isles. It maintains close connections with international Dalcroze centres, collaborating with them in training, examination and the dispensing of awards and qualifications. Current international associates include Dalcroze Australia and the Associazione Italiana Jaques-Dalcroze.
The Directors of the School includes holders of the Diplome Supérieure of the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze. Geneva, Switzerland and others with expertise in required areas who do not necessarily hold a Dalcroze Qualification. The Directors of the School are responsible for ensuring that the conditions of the use of the name Dalcroze are respected at all levels of training and examination. The School is supported by and reports to the Trustees of the Dalcroze Society UK (Inc).
The Examination Board of the School is responsible for all examinations conferring a title including the name 'Dalcroze' from pre-professional to professional and including joint qualifications. The right to use the name 'Dalcroze' or 'Jaques Dalcroze' in connection with training and qualifications is conferred not on institutions but upon those who hold the Diplome Supérieure of the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze, Geneva, Switzerland.
The School fulfils a supervisory role in respect of private courses and those offered in Dalcroze Eurhythmics as part of Masters, Bachelors or other qualifications at Graduate and Post-Graduate levels. It retains close links with the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze, Geneva, Switzerland and also with other professional training schools in Eurhythmics and related disciplines. It is engaged in curriculum development, research and the development of specific applications in particular fields such as Special Needs, Early Years, instrumental teaching and performance in music and dance. It offers professional development for teachers of the method and produces syllabuses and assessment methods and criteria for course work and examination at pre-professional and professional levels.
